What is Homeopathy?
Homeopathy is a system of natural medicine that treats the whole person – body, mind, and spirit. The word homeopathy is derived from Greek, with homoios meaning “similar” and pathos meaning “suffering”. Thus, homeopathy is based on the natural law of similars, rooted on the principle of simila similibus curentur, meaning “like cures like”.
In homeopathy, diseases are treated with remedies that in a healthy person would produce symptoms similar to those of the disease. Rather than fighting the disease directly, medicines are intended to stimulate the body to fight the disease.
How Does Homeopathy Work?
Homeopathy is based on the principle that the treatment for a disease is realized through the use of natural homeopathic remedies that, when administered to a healthy person, produce similar symptoms as those of the disease. These homeopathic remedies are derived from natural sources, like plants, animals and minerals.
Homeopathic remedies, even at high dilutions, contain nanoparticles (NPs) of the starting substances under transmission electron microscopy.
These NPs are super-potent forms of their source material with multiple properties distinct from those of their original bulk forms. NPs can penetrate membranes easily to enter the blood and lymph nodes and can even pass through the blood-brain barrier.
The cells perceive very low doses of these NPs as hormetins, mild or low intensity stressors that stimulate a cascade of adaptive responses in the cells and across the entire organism. The emergent result is a self-organized healing response.
Does Homeopathy Work?
Conclusive proof of the effectiveness of homeopathy is piling up, even if the orthodox scientific community is not yet convinced…
European Parliament: On the Status of Non-Conventional Medicine, 1997
Homeopathy was developed by a German physician, Samuel Hahnemann, from 1794 to 1843. Up to the end of 2014, there have been 189 peer-reviewed papers that report randomized controlled trials in homeopathy. Of these, 104 papers were placebo-controlled, representing research in 61 different medical conditions. Of these randomized controlled trials, 41% reported positive findings, 5% were negative, and 54% were non-conclusive.
Dr. Iris Bell, M.D., Ph.D. has been a researcher and teacher in holistic, complementary, and alternative/integrative medicine for over 30 years. Currently Professor Emeritus of Family & Community Medicine, Dr. Bell has served on the faculties at Harvard Medical School, University of California San Francisco, and the University of Arizona. She graduated magna cum laude in biology from Harvard University and then received her Ph.D. in Neuro- and Bio-behavioural Sciences and Medical Degree (M.D.) from Stanford University.
She has published over 140 academic papers and dozens of book chapters. Her current area of research is on the nanoparticle nature of homeopathic medicines and the interaction of alternative therapies and treatments with the person as a complex adaptive system.
Using market samples of metal-derived medicines from reputable manufacturers, we have demonstrated for the first time by Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM), electron diffraction and chemical analysis by Inductively Coupled Plasma-Atomic Emission Spectroscopy (ICP-AES), the presence of physical entities in these extreme dilutions, in the form of nanoparticles of the starting metals and their aggregates.

Is Homeopathy Safe?
Homeopathic medicinal products are known to have an excellent safety profile (with almost no side-effects or interactions), can alleviate public health costs by savings of up to 30% on the cost of medication, and have been proven to have positive effects on human health.
The risks with any medical system, traditional or alternative, lies with the individual practitioners and their standards of practice. For the health and safety of patients, it’s important that government legislation protect the public.
In 2004, the Natural Health Products Directorate was established, and Health Canada began to regulate traditional herbal medicines, vitamins and mineral supplements as well as homeopathic preparations in terms of initial approval and labelling.
Furthermore, in 2015 the Homeopathy Act was introduced into legislation to define the scope of practice of homeopathic practitioners and establish the College of Homeopaths of Ontario. This regulatory body protects the public in Ontario to ensure safe, ethical and competent homeopathic care. This is the first step for homeopathy to be fully integrated across Canada.
Many progressive countries around the world have already integrated homeopathy into their national healthcare systems:
…whereas homeopathy is a form of alternative medicine which is quite as safe as conventional medicine, as well as being cost-effective, since homeopathic products are manufactured in accordance with high quality standards…
